9 CIGARETTES STEP OUTLINE

A NAMELESS KILLER sits in a home  He is writing
a suicide letter.  He just went on a killing
spree, all of the bodies are in various places
                     in the house

He opens his last pack of cigarettes and declares
that by the time he finishes the pack, he will
be dead.  He lights the first one and chugs on a
                     bottle of whisky.

He writes about how unhappy he is.

(GLASS SHATTERS--audio) from her room.  He perks
up.  She (SCREAMS--audio).  He jumps off of the
                     barstool. (GUNSHOTS--audio) ring from outside.
It sounds like a (RIOT--audio) is rising.
Emergency (SIRENS--audio) DRONE.  The moans of
the undead (ZOMBIES--audio) can be heard faintly
under all of the chaos.  The room glows red, and
fills with smoke.  A strange, shadowy DARK FIGURE
can be seen manifesting in the haze, but
                     disappears quickly (CREEPY ECHO WHISPERS--audio).
He finishes his cigarette and lights another.

*This should be a sequence of quick-cuts involving rapidly
disorienting but steady CONTROLLED camera movement.  Think
something similar to Sam Raimi's signature style... EVIL
DEAD 2: DEAD BY DAWN is a great example.*

The bodies of the people he killed COME BACK TO
                     LIFE.  They are the undead.

One by one he takes them down.  The only one he
doesn't kill again is the VICTIM he was chasing.
It is his former lover. He is literally facing
                     his demons.  They taunt him.

The DARK FIGURE, a representation of Death (Grim
Reaper) confronts him, telling him he must pay
                     for his crimes.

His former lover enters the room.  He decides to
let her bite him, so that he will turn into a
zombie.  He feels regret for what he has done,
and will live out the rest of eternity as a
                     walking corpse.

Quotes Overheard and Screenplay

QUOTES:

I’ve always wanted to fuck someone in a public fountain.  That’s one of my life goals, a bucket list item.

Babe, can you not be so mad at me?

If you’re having the shittiest day ever, just watch Beyonce’s Super Bowl performance.  I promise you’ll feel better.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is on Netflix.  Good day indeed.

Real musicians, when they play, people stop talking.

SCREENPLAY:

   FADE IN:

               EXT. DOWNTOWN - NIGHT

An old, beat up car pulls up to park in front of a dive bar.

               INT. CAR - CONTINUOUS

AUGUST, male, mid 20s, finishes his CIGARETTE before tossing
               it out the window.

BEKAH, his girlfriend, stares out the passenger window.

                                     BEKAH
Babe, can you not be so mad at me?

Both of them gaze out of their respective windows.

                                     AUGUST
I'm not, I just need to cool down.

                                     BEKAH
                         Today is the worst.

                                     AUGUST
If you're having the shittiest day
                         ever, just watch Beyonce's Super
                         Bowl performance.  I promise you'll
                         feel better.

               Bekah scoffs.

                                     AUGUST
                         Hey, check out that fountain!

               ANGLE ON

On the other side of the street is a massive public fountain.

August and Bekah make their way through the crowd, DRINKS in

The crowd is unresponsive, too involved in their own
               conversations.

                                     AUGUST
                         Looks like tonight's a dud.

                                     BEKAH

Or... we could watch something else.

               August hands Bekah the remote.

                                     BEKAH
How about we catch that Super Bowl

Documentary Subjects

Mikey Trix

Mikey has managed to make his entire living off of the local music scene.  Everything from hosting shows to performing, and even karaoke.  Mikey is an interesting character; always outgoing and entertaining.  He firmly believes in the art of local music, and bringing community together.

Colin E. McCann

Colin founded the local recording studio Digital Optics LLC.  He moved to South Bend from Florida to realize his dream of starting a company in the town he grew up in.  Since Digital Optics' inception a few months ago, Colin has been able to quit his job as a clerk in a gas station and work in the studio full time.  The studio recently partnered with U93 and continues to grow.

Tim Owenn

Tim is a lifelong friend and also co-founded Digital Optics with Colin McCann.  Tim handle the business side of the studio along with promotions.  He is one of the hardest working people I know, and has been able to support his wife and family through the money he has made through the recording studio.

Narrative Project:

Doppelganger Death Squad

Tagline:  "You're coming to get you!"

Set in a retro-futuristic city, the Doppelganger Death Squad is an agency that disposes of doppelgangers as a public service.  They're a ragtag group of former military personnel, ex-convicts, and police officers.  It's a dirty job, and few are willing to do it, but the pay is good.  After a meteor crashed near the outskirts of the city Retropolis, people began to receive psychic visions of what their doppelgangers see and hear.  This is how they know their doppelganger is coming to kill and replace them.  Think GhostbustersC meets Invasion of the Body Snatchers with a Film Noir setting with a touch of grindhouse-era style.  The idea is to set up all of the elements that would be in a feature film version of Doppelganger Death Squad, and this five minute short would introduce the main characters and story elements.  The look and feel of the films Sin City, Planet Terror, and Hobo with a Shotgun are big inspirations.

Music Video:

Cold Blows the Wind (The Unquiet Grave)

Tagline:  "Love can't keep a dead man down"

A cover version of an old English folk song where a woman mourns over her loved one's grave for a year, begging him to come back and dance with her one last time.  The man is disturbed because her mourning will not allow him to rest.  He rises from the grave and they dance one last time.

Documentary:

Causing a Scene

Tagline:  "

This documentary would be about South Bend's local music scene and the art renaissance that is taking place downtown.  I would examine the trials and tribulations of what it's like to be in a local band, while also focusing on the people who attend this shows on a regular basis.  I would interview the promoters as well, and attempt to represent the culture that surrounds live music of different varieties.

Assignment 01

Hello!

My name is Sean Hasty and I'm a New Media major here at IUSB.  I'm also minoring in Film Studies.

I was born in Kalamazoo, MI, but I've lived in South Bend for most of my life.

I live and breathe cinema, but I do not watch much television.  Media has had a large impact on my life, and as much as I enjoy media for entertainment, I believe it's also important to understand the impact media has on our culture, both positive and negative.

My favorite filmmakers (in no particular order) include:

John Carpenter
Sam Raimi
David Cronenberg
Stanley Kubrick
David Lynch
Lloyd Kaufman
Peter Jackson
George A. Romero
Robert Rodriguez

My top five favorite films:

Ghostbusters
The Evil Dead (1981)
Escape from New York
2001: A Space Odyssey
Videodrome

I enjoy reading about how films are made as much as watching films.  All of the filmmakers listed above came from independent filmmaking, and I think it's interesting to learn how a filmmaker utilizes what resources they have to deliver their vision to the screen.

My favorite bands include Ween, Pink Floyd, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, and Iron Maiden.

If I could make any kind of media without restrictions, I would make feature length genre (horror, sci-fi, action) films that are as intellectually stimulating as they are entertaining.  George A. Romero's zombie films offer great social commentary in addition to being fun "popcorn" entertainment.

After I graduate from IUSB I would like to attend a film school out of state to pursue my Masters degree.

My interest in making media comes from a lifelong obsession with cinema as well as a love for storytelling, and a strong desire to not have a "normal" job.
